Ask the Archivist

Did you know… many of All American Buckle’s designs aren’t new? The majority of our buckle designs offered so far are from our archives of over 20,000 belt buckle designs. Buckles really are our business. Our website has designs from 1972-2014. The Bergamot Brass Works CEO and founder, Daniel Baughman, has been in the belt buckle business since 1969. Over the last 45 years, Daniel has played a crucial role in the design and sculpting of many of our buckles and still heads the company as Chief Executive Officer. Daniel is excited to start blogging through our “Ask the Archivist” tab on our Wordpress site, https://allamericanbuckles.wordpress.com/. Here you can ask any questions you may have about buckle collecting, vintage designs, buckle brands or anything buckle related! Just leave your questions in the comments and Daniel will do his best to find the answer! With decades of experience, he is a wealth of knowledge and looking forward to seeing your buckle finds!

The Teeth Buckle

One of our vintage buckle designs, the Teeth Buckle was first produced and copyrighted in 1974. Few people know that this buckle was actually produced directly from the upper teeth mold of the owner and founder of Bergamot Brass Works (the company that made the castings). The creative team laughed about it at first, but the design was surprisingly quite successful (dentists I guess?). 

In 1976, Daniel Baughman (the owner and CEO), was in the San Francisco International Airport terminal when he looked down and saw his teeth on a belt worn by a gentleman. He looked at the man and said “Oh you’re wearing my teeth!” The man laughed in disbelief replying sarcastically “Sure”.  Daniel then showed the man his real teeth with a smile and convinced him that the buckle was in fact a replica of his upper teeth. They laughed out loud. Later, back at the buckle factory, Daniel told of the encounter, and said he never quite imagined he would run into someone actually wearing his teeth.
